What is the Orton-Gillingham Approach?

In the early 1920’s, Dr. Samuel Orton, the “Father Orton-Gillingham Approach her of Dyslexia”, developed a multisensory approach for the treatment of language dis-orders. The Orton-Gillingham Approach (OGA) is based on his work in collaboration with Anna Gillingham, a teacher and psychologist. Current research validates the approach and many programs owe their success to the principles of instruction laid down by Dr. Orton, Anna Gillingham and their colleagues. The Orton-Gillingham Approach yields remarkable results. Practised worldwide, for example, in the Bahamas, Bermuda, Britain, Canada, China (Hong Kong), Pakistan, Singapore and U.S.A., Orton-Gillingham teaching is changing the lives of individuals with dyslexia. The Orton-Gillingham Approach empowers students to succeed in school and in life.

What is Multisensory Orton-Gillingham Language?

Bridges Multisensory Learning Centre provides explicit and direct Orton-Gillingham based Multisensory Language instruction to students with dyslexia or other gaps in language learning in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne to bridge learning needs.

Our programs are based on an Orton Gillingham methodology which has proven to be effective with students with learning differences. Instruction engages kinesthetic (movement), auditory (hearing), and visual (sight), so the information presented reaches the brain by multiple modes simultaneously. Instruction is typically one on one and highly interactive. Learning is at the student’s own pace.

Assessment happens continuously. The student’s individual learning needs guide instruction. Because all readers need strong phonemic awareness to be the best reader they can be, this type of instruction can help all students. It works well for any English language learners.
